The gaming industry’s shift toward digital distribution has accelerated in recent years, but Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser believes physical editions should continue to be offered as long as players still want them.
Speaking about the ongoing debate between physical and digital releases, Houser said publishers should give consumers a choice instead of moving entirely toward digital-only distribution. While digital storefronts provide convenience through instant downloads and easier updates, he acknowledged that many players still value owning games in physical form.
Physical copies remain popular among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate boxed editions, artwork, and the ability to display their game libraries. Some players also prefer discs because they can be resold, shared with friends, or preserved independently of digital storefronts.
The discussion comes at a time when several publishers are placing greater emphasis on digital sales, with some modern consoles even offering disc-free versions. Despite this trend, demand for physical releases continues, particularly for major AAA launches and collector’s editions.
Houser’s comments suggest that the future of game distribution does not have to be limited to a single format. Instead, he believes companies should continue supporting physical editions whenever there is sufficient consumer interest, allowing players to choose how they purchase and own their games.
With blockbuster releases such as Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, the conversation around physical versus digital ownership is likely to remain a significant topic among both publishers and the gaming community.
